Stacking the Shelves #12

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which we feature all the book goodness that we received, borrowed or purchased during the previous week. All links are to Goodreads.

Purchased (Physical Books)

The Secret Mistress by Mary Balogh - I felt like a good historical romance...

Purchased for Kindle

Eternal Starling by Angela Corbett - I found this book while participating in the YA Scavenger Hunt this week; it looks awesome.

Truly Madly Yours by Rachel Gibson - The wonderful Nereyda from Mostly YA Book Obsessed  featured this book last week as one of her favorite romances, so I decided to buy it.  We have very similar tastes, so I'm bound to love it too :)

Spill Over by Jolene Perry - This one was recommended to me via Goodreads (can't remember by whom, sorry!).  Sounds good, have you read it?

Library

Purity by Jackson Pierce - I really enjoyed Sisters Red, so I quickly grabbed Purity when I saw it at the library.

Blackwatch by Jenna Burtenshaw - This is Wintercraft #2, if you haven't read book #1, you should.  Its a very unique fantasy series.

For Review

The Paladin Prophecy by Mark Frost - Doesn't this cover looks awesome?  It sounds like the amazing start of a new series. Thank you for Random House for the opportunity.

Covet by Melissa Darnell - This is The Clann #2, Crave was pretty good and I can't wait to read the sequel. Thank you to HarlequinTeen.

I received a sticker, signed book plate, two signed Shine bookmarks and a thank you letter from the wonderful Jeri Smith-Ready for being in Team Kilt for the YA Crush Tournament.

Top Ten Books I Bought Because of Their Cover

Top 10 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

I don’t own some of these books, I do try to take advantage of my library when I can, but they are books that I grabbed because of their beautiful covers.  Click on the link to see the covers in Goodreads.

1. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand – Beautiful book and cover.

2. Die For Me by Amy Plum – Again, a gorgeous cover let to a wonderful story. Not disappointed at all.

3. Eyes Like Starsby Lisa Mantchev – This is the first book of the Theather Illuminata Series, which is very different and all the covers are just as beautiful.

4. Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston – Another great series about fairies, war, betrayal, and an epic romance.

5. Crave by Melissa Darnell – I just recently finished reading this book that I requested from NetGalley, who could resist a cover like that?

6. Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel – I wouldn’t call the story beautiful precisely, but I did like the story and the way vampires are portrait here.

7. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa – The beginning of one of my favorite series, I grabbed this book at the story just because I loved its cover.

8. Falling Under by Gwen Hayes – Not the best story out there, but very entertaining, I will still grab the sequel.

9. Glimmerglass by Jenna Black – I really like Dana, she is such as strong character, even when she is in danger all the time.

10. Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon – This book was part of my Waiting on Wednesday a while back, just due to the gorgeous cover.  I am cheating a little here because I haven’t read this book yet.  I did order it last week though, does that count?

Review: Crave by Melissa Darnell (The Clann #1)

Title: Crave by Melissa Darnell
Published: October 18th 2011 by Harlequin Teen
Source: NetGalley for review
Grade rate: B+

Savannah Colbert has never known why she's so hated by the kids of the Clann. Nor can she deny her instinct to get close to Clann golden boy Tristan Coleman. Especially when she recovers from a strange illness and the attraction becomes nearly irresistible. It's as if he's a magnet, pulling her gaze, her thoughts, even her dreams. Her family has warned her to have nothing to do with him, or any members of the Clann. But when Tristan is suddenly everywhere she goes, Savannah fears she's destined to fail.
For years, Tristan has been forbidden to even speak to Savannah Colbert. Then Savannah disappears from school for a week and comes back…different, and suddenly he can't stay away. Boys seem intoxicated just from looking at her. His own family becomes stricter than ever. And Tristan has to fight his own urge to protect her, to be near her no matter the consequences….

My Review

Crave was a really good read for me.  It was fast paced, interesting with a mix of paranormal beings that I’m sure we are going to learn more about as the series continues.
One of the things I like most about Crave is that the story is told from alternating points of view, this way we get to know what is happening to both Savannah and Tristan.  Savannah was a nice character, she tries to be strong and follow the rules but it gets hard since there is no precedence for someone like her.  She is a little insecure, but I sure don’t blame her!  I loved Tristan, he is a handsome, protective, and loving character and I really enjoyed seeing the world (and Sav) from his perspective.  The rest of the characters were well developed, but absent on the last half of the book.  I really liked Ann; she is a good friend and deals with the “strangeness” that surrounds her very well.
The writing was easy to follow and at times funny.  The plot was well developed (if a little predictable) especially since we are introduced to a new paranormal “universe”.  To me the forbidden romance takes precedence over the paranormal, and I really enjoyed that.  I will definitely read the sequel.
About the cover: The cover is really pretty and both the color read and the natural setting is a significant part of the story.  I also like the placement and font of the title and the contrast of colors.
