Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

This week’s Top Ten is really hard!  I can think of endings I would like to see re-written, characters that shouldn’t have died and did, series that were too long to hold my interest, or the ones that I wish would never end, and so on and so forth. However, I don’t think that I ever just thought “hmm… I wish there was a book about x,y,z” Thus, be warned that I might not make to ten (just saying!).

1.  YA books with Hispanic characters – Why?  Because I’m Hispanic and our culture is very family oriented and conservative and this comes with a host of problems and interactions. Also, our extended families are HUGE and we have a highly developed sense of responsibility toward them.

Who did it well:  The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler and Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

2.  YA historical – I love historical romances, it’s what I read for years before fining my way to YA and they hold a very dear place in my heart.  I would like to see more of these in YA.

Who did it well: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

3.  YA thrillers – I love books where there is a mystery, a lot of running and figuring out stuff.  Clear as mud?  Well, I don’t see a lot of these in YA, in fact I can’t think of any I’ve read recently.  Can you?

4.  YA Steampunk – This is a relatively new genre for me and I love it!  It’s a combination of paranormal, mystery, historical and with a lot of machines involved.

Who did it well: The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross and Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

5.  Fantasy – I know there has been a boom of fantasy in YA lately, but I love it. Especially since most often than not, it’s paired with magic or paranormal undertones.

Who did it well:  Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass and The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

6. Comedies – Sometimes I just feel like reading a light, fluffy, funny story.

Who did it well: Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Sorry, that’s all I can think off!  I’m sure all your lists will be more impressive than mine.  Leave me a comment and I’ll come check them out!

Top Ten Best / Worst Series Endings

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

When I started gathering my answers I found out two things: First, that I'm hopelessly behind in a LOT of series (aka unfinished!), and second, that fortunately I have more 'Best' endings than 'Worst'

BEST

1. Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter series) - I don't have to explain, do I?

2.  Timeless by Gail Carriger (Parasol Protectorate) - This series is steampunk at its best.  I'm very happy with the ending, even if there is wide open for much more and I think I read somewhere that there will be a companion series soon.

3.  Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi (Under the Never Sky series) - I just finished this one yesterday and this book is AMAZING!  If you haven't read this series, you really should.

4.  The Bitter Kingdom by Rae Carson (Fire and Thorns series) - Another beloved series that ended recently.  I'm so happy for Hector and Elisa and their kingdom. An epic ending :)

5.  The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa (Iron Fey series) - A book from Ash's point of view, a quest, and Puck to boot. What else could you ask for?

6.  Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead (Vampire Academy series) - Dimitri, Rose... You get the idea, right?

7.  Return to Paradise by Simone Elkeles (Leaving Paradise series) - This is a duet and it's so good!  I love this series, the ending was perfection!

Worst

8. Gone by Lisa McMann (Wake series) - I really enjoyed the series, up until this book actually.  Janie turned into an indecisive mess and the ending was so open that it drove me crazy.

9. Sever by Lauren DeStefano (The Chemical Garden series) - Honestly, this series redemption is DeStefano's writing.  The magic of Wither was gone in the second book and this one was a hot mess. And everything got fixed and honky dory in the last chapter :(

10. We'll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han (The Summer series) - What was that? Belly wanting to get married at 18?  Everyone falling in place for the weirdest wedding in history?  And then we get a sort of epilogue for an ending?  What happened in between?!

What is in your top ten this week? Have you read any of these? Do you agree or disagree with me?

Top Ten Books on My Summer TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

There are SO MANY books that I want to read this Summer!  Here are a few:

1.  Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas - I'm actually half way through this one right now and it's amazing!

2.  Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo - I loved the first book of the Grisha series and I can't wait to read book two.

3.  False Sight by Dan Krokos - I really enjoyed False Memory, "B" already read its sequel and he said it's amazing!

Waiting on Wednesday: Wild Cards by Simone Elkeles

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

Title: Wild Cards by Simone Elkeles
Published by: Walker Books
Published on:October 1st, 2013

After getting kicked out of boarding school, bad boy Derek Fitzpatrick has no choice but to live with his ditzy stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out she plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois. Derek’s counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else’s family drama.Ashtyn Parker knows one thing for certain--people you care about leave without a backward glance. A football scholarship would finally give her the chance to leave. So she pours everything into winning a state championship, until her boyfriend and star quarterback betrays them all by joining their rival team. Ashtyn needs a new game plan, but it requires trusting Derek—someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. Is she willing to put her heart on the line to try and win it all?

Why I want to read it:  It's by Simone Elkeles!  I really don't need any other reason than that, BUT it also sounds amazing.  Oh, and how cool is the name 'Ahstyn'?

What are you waiting for this week?

Top Ten Books Dealing with Tough Subjects

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

I have to confess that I try to avoid books with tough subjects. Nonetheless, I have managed to read a few throughout the years.  Here are my top ten:

1.  Willow by Julia Hoban - This story is heartbreaking, it not only deals with grief, but on using cutting as an outlet for the pain.

2.  Just Listen by Sarah Dessen - I adore Sarah Dessen books, she deals with tough subjects with depth, but still very tastefully.  Just Listen is about rape, understanding, love, fear, and a lot more.

3.  The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - If you read this book, I don't need to explain further. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?

Top Ten Contemporary YA Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

I'm going to try to limit myself to my Top Ten favorite contemporary young adult books, but I'm making no promises.

1.  The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen - Sarah Dessen is one of my favorite authors, I'll read anything she writes; but this book remains my favorite.

2.  Breathe by Abbi Glines - Breathe has one of my favorite YA couples of all time; a perfect romance :)

3.  The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson - This book is pure poetry and lyrics in motion.  It's emotive, bittersweet, and so especial.

4.  Guitar Notes by Mary Amato - This is a recent read for me and I adore the writing style and also Tripp's personality and the way his friendship with Lyla develops.

5.  Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan - This book is quirky and oh, so funny!  I love this one :)

6.  Easy by Tammara Webber - Easy is an amazing book.  The characters are incredible, the plot amazing and the romance to die for!

7.  Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry - One of my favorite books so far this year, Pushing the Limits has amazing characters that have to deal with a lot, at a very young age and grow with each's other help.

8.  Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday - This series is so funny, full of mystery, technology, the ins and outs of life in high school and some amazing characters too!

9.  The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - Another favorite this year is John Green's masterpiece.  This book is hard to describe for me because is that good.

10. Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles - This series is another great read. Again, amazing characters overcome so much and learn to do so with the help of a really beautiful relationship.

Other books in this list (told you I couldn't stop at 10!) are: Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles, Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols, Willow by Julia Hoban, If I Stay by Gayle Forman, and Wish I Could Have Said Goodbye by Sari Brady.

What is in your Top Ten this week?  Have you read any of these?  What are your favorite contemporary books?

In My Mailbox #29

IMM is a weekly meme inspired by Alea at the Pop Culture Junkie and hosted by the wonderful Kristi at The Story Siren.  All links are to Goodreads
Purchased

The Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare - I am yet to start this series.  I know it's great because I LOVE the Immortal Instruments series.  I'll get to it soon!

Gift

Those of you with Hispanic descent might know that January 6th was Three Kings Day (Día de los Reyes Magos).  It is a tradition in which the three kings (the same ones that visited Jesus when he was born) come during the morning on the 6th to bring toys to the children that leave grass for their camels.  Well, anyway my hubby got me two books, because I've been such a good girl and all.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - I've been dying to read this book!

Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles - At last, the last book of the Perfect Chemistry series!

I also received a set of autographed bookmarks from a Giveaway hosted by Young Adult Book Reviews.  Thank you Tammi!
