Stacking the Shelves #56

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which we feature all the book goodness that we received, borrowed or purchased during the previous week. All links are to Goodreads.

Hello gorgeous people!  This is two weeks worth of books for me (not much though).  I have an eventfull past two weeks: I had a birthday, a long holiday weekend, we are car shopping (no purchase yet), and school started for the kids.
Purchased (or Free) for Kindle

Buried Secrets by Emme Rollins - I think this one came by to me from a Goodreads recommendation.

You Are Mine by Janeal Falor - I participated in a promotion for this book several weeks ago and it seems really interesting; I also like the cover a lot.

Purchased Books

Origin by Jennifer Armentrout - No explanation needed, right?

Flesh and Bone by Jonathan Maberry - This is book #3 of the Benny Imura series and I need to get caught up soon.

Library

The Symptoms of My Insanity by Mindy Raf - Seems like a fun read.

The Raft S.A. Bodeen - On the other hand this one looks very intense.

Review

The Darkest Part by Trisha Wolf - Received this book for a blog tour, coming soon.  I participated in the cover reveal and I can't wait to read it.

Extrated by Sherry D. Ficklin and Tyler H. Jolley - This book is about time travel and it looks really interesting. Thank you to Spencer Hill.

My Date from Hell by Tellulah Darling - I received this book from the author, I really enjoyed the first book of the series, My Ex from Hell and this is the next book of the series. Thanks!

Gift

Just One Day by Gayle Forman - My oldest son, "A", got me this book for my BDay.  I read it already and it is one of the best books I've read so far this year.  Love it! The paperback cover is so pretty too :)

That's it for my!  What's stacking your shelves this week?

Waiting on Wednesday: Fire & Ash by Jonathan Maberry (Benny Imura #4)

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine in which we have the opportunity to let others know about books that we are eagerly waiting for.

Title: Fire & Ash by Jonathan Maberry
Published by: Simon & Schuster
Release on: September 3rd, 2013

Benny Imura and his friends have made it to Sanctuary, they've found the jet and they've discovered that civilization is struggling to regain its foothold in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. Scientists are on the verge of finding a cure for the zombie plague. It should be time for celebration, but it's not. Benny's best friend, Chong, has been infected by an arrow dipped in the flesh of a zombie and he hovers between life and death and Dr McReady, a researcher who may have the critical formula for a cure, has gone missing. So Benny convinces Captain Ledger to mount a search and rescue mission to find the doctor and help Chong. But with the Reapers still pursuing their plan to turn all zombies into super-fast shock troops even if they can save Chong, can they save themselves? In the fourth book of the thrilling and emotionally charged Rot & Ruin series, the battle to end all battles is about to begin..

Why I want to read it:  Even though I still have to read book #3, I love this series.  It's the only zombie books that I've read and they are absolutely amazing! Hmm... this cover is less scary than the others.

What are you waiting for this week?

Feature and Follow Friday

Feature and Follow Friday is an awesome blog-hop hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison CanRead

What is a book you didn’t like that all your friends raved about or what book did you love that wasn’t popular?

I think the Hush, Hush and Fallen series received a lot of hype and I wasn’t too crazy about them. I read the first book of both and didn’t continue with the series.  Wither is another series that I’m ambivalent about, but since I read the first two books, I’m committed now to finish the series.

I love the Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey, Benny Imura series by Jonathan Maberry, Dreamhunter duet  by Elizabeth Knox, and Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey, and the Théatre Illuminata series (yet to read last book) by Lisa Mantchev.  These are all amazing books/series!

How about you?

Top Ten Books to Get in the Halloween Spirit

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

I really don't like horror movies or books, but here are some great books /series to get you in the mood for Halloween:

1.   The Mostrumologist by Rick Yancey - I am right now listening to The Isle of Blood, book #3 of this series, and just like wine, these books get better and better with time.  The writing is just amazing, but be warned that it is not for the weak of heart.

2.   Rot & Ruin (Benny Imura) by Jonathan Maberry - This is a series about zombies and it is SO good.  Not for younger readers, but it's still an amazing series.

3.   Croak by Gina Damico - This series is both creepy and funny.

4.   Soul Screamer series by Rachel Vincent - Banshees, reapers, demons, and all sort of supernatural beings can be found in this series, another awesome reading experience.

5.   Clarity by Kim Harrington - If you like mystery, but monsters are not for you, give this series a try.  It does have a paranormal take, but it is more about the mystery than anything else.

6.   Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann - Creepy and fascinating... loved this one.

7.   Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong - Necromancers, werewolves, witches and warlocks, this series has it all AND mad scientists as well.  Really good series, and the predecessors of Armstrong's Darkest Rising (The Gatherint) series.

8.   Soulless by Gail Carriger - This is an amazing book!  I'm sad to say that I haven't been able to pick up the rest of the series yet, but I absolutely loved this one.  It has mad scientists too, and werewolves and vampires too.

9.   Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce - A dark re-telling of the Red Riding Hood series.

10. Southern Vampires (Sookie Stackhouse) series by Charlaine Harris - If you follow HBO's True Blood, they you should pick up these books.  They are different (and in my opinion) better than the series, the last book (#13) will be published next May.

Others to consider Harper Connelly series by Charlaine Harris, Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.

What is in your top ten books for Halloween?

Stacking the Shelves #20

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which we feature all the book goodness that we received, borrowed or purchased during the previous week. All links are to Goodreads.

Hi gorgeous people!  I didn't get much this week, but I intend to remedy that next week (as soon as I get paid :)  We had some issues this week, besides all the craziness of work and the boy's school, the hubby's laptop went to an early grave and we were sharing the desktop (where I usually blog).  Since he is taking on-line classes, he had dibs.  His new laptop arrived yesterday (thank God!), so next week should be much better.

Purchased (or Free!) for Kindle

Casey Barnes Eponymous by E. A. Rigg - I was contacted by the author for a review, but the book looks so good (I love 'music' books!) that I purchased it instead :)

Redemption by Susannah Sandlin - Not sure how I learned about this one, but it sounds amazing.

Bah, Humbug! by Heather Horrocks - Looks like a fun novella, and just in time for the holidays. Love the cover!

The Annihilation of Foreverland by Tony Bertauski - I received a recommendation in Goodreads for this one.  Doesn't it looks gorgeous?

Library

Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams - This book was my WOW a while back and I can't wait to dig in!

Flesh & Bone by Jonathan Maberry - How I love this series!!! If you read Rot & Ruin you know that we are in for an intense installment, right?

The Isle of Blood by Rick Yancey -  Ditto :)  This is a creepy-stactic series as well.  I got this one in audio book.

For Review

Diverse Energies by Tobias S. Buckell and Joe Monti (editors) -  This book is an anthology of dystopian stories, should be good.  Thank you to Tu Books and Netgalley.

Feature and Follow Friday

Feature and Follow Friday is an awesome blog-hop hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

The quesiton this week is:  What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic detail of goriness...

I can thing of two awesome series that will make amazing Halloween movies:

Rot and Ruin (Benny Imura series) by Jonathan Maberry.  This is a dystopian-zombie series that is as creepy as it is plain incredible. How's this for  movie poster?  Love it!

The Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey.  Mr. Yancey is an outanding writer, he can describe terrible monsters, and deadful situations/adventures with a language that is almost lyrical.  I am curious to see Dr. Warthrop's lab and the mostrumologist's headquaters in New York.

What book would you love to see as a Halloween movie?

Feature & Follow Friday

Feature and Follow Friday is an awesome blog-hop hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

This week's features are Jennifer @ Reading and Writing Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance and @ The Paperback Princess this week's question is:

Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don't like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

I usually don't read Sci Fi, but some books, like the Across the Universe series by Beth Revis is pretty good.

I'm not too crazy about horror either, but I have to confess to loving two YA horror series: The Mostrumologist by Rick Yancey and the Benny Imura (Rot & Ruin) by Jonathan Mayberry.

What genres have you tried and loved?

Discussion: Do You Read Sad Books?

This past week my WOW was Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams and I received some comments along the lines that they might read the book despite of it sounding so sad or that they wouldn’t read it because it was sad.  This made me think that some people may deny themselves a marvelous book because there is a chance that the story might made them cry.

Some of the books that made me cry turned out to be amazing and I would read them again because the author was so good that her or his writing moved me in an almost magical way.  To me, it is a testament to great writing, and outstanding characterization that it made care enough about the story to spill tears over it.

Here are some books that moved me to tears:

The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa – I cannot express how much I love the Iron Fey series.  The third book made me cry so bad, thank goodness for The Iron Knight!

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green – Oh my!  This book is about kids with cancer, thus I knew going in that it was not going to be a ‘happy’ book, but it is one of the best books I’ve ever read (I’ve read many ;-).  Please give it a try, just be prepared and have tissues handy.

The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder – This book also relates to cancer, but it turned out to be so much more.  It is a book about faith, love, understanding and growth; and it is SO good.

Dust & Decay by Jonathan Maberry –  Dust and Decay is book two on the Benny Imura series (an amazing YA zombie series) and there was an unexpected turn of events in this book that made me cry like a baby (while driving I might add…)

A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks – I don’t think I have ever read a book by Sparks that hasn’t made me cry.  A Walk to Remember was my first experience with his writing and I still remember how good it was.

The Friday Night Knighting Club by Kate Jacobs – This is an adult book recommended to me by some co-workers.  I don’t know why it didn’t come with a warning though.

I love every single one of these books and would not ‘un-read’ them for anything!

How about you?  Do you rule out ‘sad’ books and don’t even try?  What sad books have you read that are a must read?

Top Ten Books that Broke my Heart

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

The topic of this week's top ten is books that broke my heart a little.  The following is a list of books in which I cried, some a little and some quite a bit.

1. The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa – I love the Iron Fey series with a passion, however the end of the third book make me cry so bad.  Thank goodness for The Iron Knight!

2. A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks – I don’t think I have ever read a Nicholas Sparks book without crying, I think he sits there finding a story that guarantees tears galore.  Anyway, this is the first book by Sparks that I read and I cried really badly.  The ending just broke my heart.

3. At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks - Honestly, I must like crying because I keep reading his books!

4. The Friday Night Knighting Club by Kate Jacobs – Good Lord!  I read this book after two friends recommended and it was great, but I cried so much that my husband came running thinking I was hurt!

5. New Moon by Stephenie Meyer – Needless to say I felt just like Bella!  I was so sad when Edward left, still this is my favorite book in the saga.

6. The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder – I absolutely loved this book, but the ending, even if expected, was still heartbreaking.

7. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – This was my pick for best book of 2011.  Such a beautifully written book with a unique story, I hope Karou and Akiva get their happy ending (eventually of course).

8. Linger by Maggie Stiefvater – This book made me so sad!  When Grace started getting sick I was just so… well, sad.

9. Dust & Decay by Jonathan Maberry - Not only did I cried with this book, but I cried while driving since I was listening to it!

10. Harry Potter and the Deadly Hollows by J. K. Rowling – To be honest I cried the book before when Dumbledore died, but in this book there are so many good witches and wizards that died that I was probably crying on and off for a good while.

Well, that’s my list.  I can’t wait to read yours, please leave me a comment and a link to your post.

Top Ten Books I Think Would Make Great Book Club Pics

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

Since I have never been member of a book club, I have no idea what goes on. BUT I do love to read and I love to talk books (duh!)  Here is a list of books I would love to talk people about:

1. Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins – How fun would it be to talk about these awesome books and compare stories, Anna vs. Lola and Cricket vs. St. Clair.

2. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – This book is so good (so is the series), we can review it and review the movie too.

3. Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer – I love Twilight, I can probably talk books and movies for hours at a time…

4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – Who wants to talk about Mr. Darcy with me? Anyone?

5. Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Mayberry - An amazing book that might not be for everyone.  If you like zombies, look no further than this series.

6. The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen (or any of her books!) – I love her writing and would love nothing more than to seat and talk about my favorite one.

7. The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson – I love this book, it is one of my favorites ever!

8. The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs – This is not a YA book, but it is so touching and sad at the same time.  A really great book!

9. The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder – I just posted by review for this book yesterday and I have to say that I really loved it.  It is quite lovely.

10. Divergent by Veronica Roth – I think this book will be excellent material for a club, don’t you think?  There is so much to talk about!

I am hoping that some of you have more experience than me!  What are your pics?

Top Ten Books I’d Recommend to Someone Who Doesn’t Read YA

Top 10 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

I hope that some of you at least have read young adult books.  It is almost all I read now, with the occasional adult romance or adult paranormal book.  I have included a little of everything in my Top Ten.  Enjoy!

1.  The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins – If you’d never read YA, you should at least try the first book in the series (you won’t be able to stop though!) If you like dystopian, this is the book for you!

2.  The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen – To be honest, probably any of Ms. Dessen’s books will do (this is my favorite).  She writes contemporary romance / self-discovery books that are wonderful.

3.  Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater – Shiver, Linger, and Forever are a magnificent read.  Maggie’s writing is so lyrical that it’s almost like reading poetry.

4.  Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa – I love this series: The Iron King, the Iron Daughter, the Iron Queen and The Iron Knight will be forever one of my favorite series.  (I promise to love Ash forever too!)  If you like fairies, romance and adventure, these are for you.

5.  Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – Have you seen the movies?  If you liked the movies you have to give these books a try, they are awesome!

6.  The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer – I love these books and the movies (other than the first one) are great too, of course books are always better than movies.  Vampires, werewolves, and true love, it’s a good combination!

7.  Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins - A true jewel of contemporary novels, this is an incredible romance.  PLEASE give it a try!

8.  Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – This is my favorite read of last year.  If you like fantasy, look not more than between the covers of this novel.  It is an amazing read.

9.  Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry – this is the first book of the Benny Imura series and it is a combination of dystopian and true horror.  If you like books about zombies and a bit of horror and gore, try this series.  Mr. Maberry’s writing is truly amazing.

10. Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan – This series is about Greek mythology and adventure.  It is a great read for both boys and girls 10 and up! (If you saw the movie, please disregard, as it was definitely not like the books.)

I could keep going on and on: The Vampire Academy series, the Body Finder Series, The Sky is Everywhere, Unearthly, Angelfire, Paranormalcy, The Mortal Instruments series, and many more truly amazing books.
