Best Book Covers of 2013

Top 10 of 2013 is hosted by a group of fabulous bloggers and you can find more information here

I don’t know about you, but I think 2013 may just have been the greatest ever year for book covers in YA. Trends have changed and there’s a whole lot of room for being different, striking and innovative – so without further ado, I’m going to let the covers speak for themselves!

Arianne’s List

1.  The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson - I don’t know what it is about this cover, but every time I look at it, I love it even more! It’s got such a luminous, mysterious feel – incredible.

2.  Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys is beautiful inside and out. The cover draws you into the story and the prose keeps you there.

3.  The Tragedy Paper by Elizabeth Laban never fails to stun me. It’s wintry and stark and absolutely wonderful.

4.  The Archived by Victoria Schwab has such a visionary cover. It marries illusion – smoke and mirrors, keys and doors – with the absolute humanity of its narrator. Perfect.

Review: Awaken by Meg Cabot (Abandon Trilogy #3)

Title: Awaken by Meg Cabot
Published: July 2nd, 2013 by Point
Source: ARC from BEA
Format: Paperback
Genre:  Paranormal / Romance / Mythology
Age group: Young adult
Challenge(s): Finish the Series
Grade rate: B

Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go. Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves. But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul. If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

My Review

Even though I wasn’t impressed with Abandon (see my review here), the first book of the trilogy, I’m glad I continue reading because it did get better and better.  Awaken a pretty good conclusion to the series.

Awaken starts right after the end of Underworld (see my review here) and finds Pierce helping John with his work in the Underworld and of course, the furies have not given up in making their life hell (pun intended).  Pierce and John continue to be very much in love and even though they have to deal with a lot, they stick together and learn about each other in the process.  Pierce grew a significantly from the hesitant, whining girl of the first book, into a more confident and powerful young woman.  On the other hand, John learned to compromise and taking Pierce’s feelings into account.  I love his protectiveness of her.

Alex keeps being annoying, obtuse and egocentric and quite frankly I dislike him to almost the end.  I’m glad that something good happened to the poor guy.  Kayla is also in the Underworld (temporarily) and seems to be getting along very nicely with Frank, a strapping pirate type guy from John’s crew.  Pierce’s parents have a bit of the spotlight in this one and I’m happy that the cat is out of the bag, it makes life a lot simpler (to all the teens reading this, please take note).

I have to say (it’s my civic duty!) that the blub doesn’t do the book justice.  The fact that Pierce and John revived a soul is not as significant and prominent as it sounds here.  However, someone sort of dies, which was a big unexpected surprise.  As it happens often in the series, the dead have a tendency of not staying that way and the problem gets fixed shortly (and thankfully) after.  The plot is action packed and full of twists and turns and an overabundance of furies.

The ending was neat and all loose ends were tied.  I’m happy with it and I hope that Pierce and John are too :)

A few quotes for you:

“It isn’t funny,” John said. “ You kissed him on purpose just to annoy me. So do you know what I get to do now?” He stopped pacing and pointed to himself. “I get to kiss someone – whoever I want – just to annoy you.” …
“All right,” I whispered, rubbing his hand across my check. “You get one free kiss…whomever you want.”
“What if who I want to kiss is you? he asked.
“ I think that can be arranged,” I said.

“You don’t know my parents,” I said. “I’ve been trying to tell them the truth about you since the day I died and met you, and all it’s gotten me is a lot of appointments with a bunch of shrinks.  They are not going to believe the truth about you, and they are not going to let me be with you.”
On the landing, John caught hold of my arm, then turned me around to face him.
“Pierce,” he said, looking down into my eyes and smiling, as he smoothed a dark curl of hair from my forehead. “They can’t stop us from being together. And they will believe you. Because I’m here with you. You’re not alone anymore.”

About the cover: These covers are all beautiful and this one is my favorite. It’s so soft, gentle and projects love.

Top Ten Books at the Top of My Spring TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

My list considers 'Spring' to be March, April and May.  Here it goes:

1.  Unremembered by Jessica Brody - I had this one as my WoW a while ago and for a good reason.  I've seen a few reviews and only good things, I can't wait to read it :)

2.  The Rising by Kelley Armstrong - Although I like the Darkest Powers series better, the final installment of the Darkest Rising series will have appearances by some of the characters from the previous one.  Also, there are still many unanswered questions.

3.  This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith - I really enjoyed Probability and this one looks and sounds amazing.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

This list a little hard to come up with, because for the most part I love these books (or series), but I was a bit frustrated, upset or annoyed by them even if for a brief moment.

1.  Bella Swan from the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer - I love the Twilight series and anything that's Twilight related, but very often Bella was a bit annoying with her self-doubts and most of all with the way she just stopped "living" when Edward left in in New Moon.

2.  Kate Winter from The Goodness Test series by Aimée Carter - This is another series that I adore (sadly it just came to an end), but book #2 threw me off because Kate became so insecure and whinny.  Don't worry, book three was awesome!

3.  Alejandro from The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson - I'm absolutely in love with this series and I also love the grown that Elisa went through, but I was so exasperated by her husband Alejandro.  He was handsome to be sure but very ambivalent, didn't want to make any decisions and he was a coward to boot; I was very dissapointed!

4.  Pellinore Warthrop from The Mostrumologist by Rick Yancey - Where to start?  Doctor Warthrop is like Mr. Spock, he shows no emotion, views everything using logic and science and its cruel and inconsiderate  still I can't help but liking him.

5.  Belly from The Summer Series by Jenny Han - Wanting to get married at 18 for the wrong reasons is NOT cool!  Her feelings kept going back and forth between Jer to Conrand, and couldn't stand it!

6.  Pierce from Abandon by Meg Cabot - Pierce came back from the death and instead of thanking her lucky stars, she unraveled and kept questioning 'why'. Irritating. (book two is much better!)

7.  Nastasya from Immortal Beloved by Kate Tiernan - I really liked this book, but I haven't read the rest in the series yet.  I remember that she complained a lot and that her life took a turn for the worst because she kept the wrong company.

8.  Jessica from Jessica's Guide to Dating in the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey - It took Jessica so long to believe that she was a vampire and that she was in love with Lucius that I would have throttled her if I could!

9.  Lenah from Stolen Nights by Rebecca Maizel - It's like Lenah went through a personality change or something!  The character that I came to love in Infinite Days was no more, I hope book #3 is better.

10.  Ember from Article 5 by Kristen Simmons - How obvious was is that Chase was madly in love with her?  I felt like screaming at her, really!

Well, that's my list.  What's in your Top Ten this week?

Top of 2012: Books I'm Looking Forward to in 2013

Top 10 of 2012 is a meme hosted by these wonderful blogs: Fiktshun, A Life Bound by Books, Confessions of a Bookaholic, Two Chicks of Books, andMagical Urban Fantasy Reads

Hello gorgeous people!  2013 promises to be an incredible year for YA.  My TBR list in Goodreads is overwhelming by now and I will probably never read that many books anyway, but a girl can only hope, right?

Here are some of the lovelies that I’m waiting for next year:

The Sequels:

1.  Shades of Earth (Across the Universe #3) by Beth Revis – Finally!  The conclusion to the series, I can’t wait to see if they revive everyone from Earth, what the new planet looks like and if Amy and Elder end up happy and together :)

The names change between the UK and US editions

2.  Legacy (Wintercraft #3) by Jenna Burtenshaw – The fantasy series is a jewel to me, full of magic, traitors, fear and courage.  It has already been published in the UK, but sadly, not on the States, yet.

3.  Throne of Glass #2 (untitled) by Sara J. Maas – I’m dying to see what happens next with our heroine and her suitors and I can’t wait to see the king defeated. (No book cover yet)

4.  If I Should Die (Revenants #3) by Amy Plum – After that mean cliffhanger, it’s no wonder I cannot wait for the third book.  I routing for you Vincent!

5.  Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins – Book one was pure awesome!  I needed this one, like, yesterday.

The Stand Alone:

6. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins – By the author of Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy next door, this promises to be as good. (No book cover yet)

7.  The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen – I will read anything she writes. Anything.

8.  This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith – The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, was really good, I can’t wait to see what this Smith comes up with next.

New Series:

9.  Just One Day by Gayle Forman – I’ve already heard wonderful things about the lucky souls that received an ARC of this one.  Did you read If I Stay?  Did you love it?  Thought so.

10. Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School #1) by Gail Carriger – If you’ve read Soulless (although I haven’t keept up with this adult series, it’s still amazing!), you know why I’m eagerly waiting for this one.  It should be epic!

And Because I Couldn’t Stop at Ten…

Beautiful cover, right?

Awaken (Abandon Trilogy #3) by Meg Cabot  - Underworld also ended in kind of a cliffhanger… finally we get to see John and Pierce happy (*crossing fingers*)

Divergent #3 (Untitled) by Veronica Roth – Although I haven’t read Insurgent yet, Divergent was outstanding, maybe I get to read both together next year :) (No book cover yet)

The Bitter Kingdom (Fire and Thorns #3) by Rae Carson -  I finished book two last night and Oh, my!  Just, wow! (No book cover yet)

Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin #2) by R.L. LaFavers  - I loved Grave Mercy, and these kick-ass heroines are amazing, plus, I hope that we get to see a bit of Ismae and Gavriel.

Gates of Paradise (Blue Bloods #7) by Melissa de la Cruz – Finally!  The conclusion of the Blue Bloods series!

Can I keep going?  I guess rules are rules (*pouting*)

Top Ten Most Vivid Settings in Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

1.  The Nevernever from The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa - The world of fairy, with all its differences, Spring, Winter and Iron realms, ports, forests, and amazing beings.

2.  Dystopian Chicago from Divergent by Veronica Roth - Not only do we get a vivid setting, but an equally amazing description of how society functions and behaves.

3.  Panem from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - I bet anyone that have ever read this book is amazed by the differences in each district and outraged by the abundance of the Capitol.

4.  Avalon from Wings by Aprilynne Pike - Another fairy world, but very different from number one, but not less vivid.

5.  Paris from Die for Me by Amy Plum - In this series, Paris is another character, it comes alive in the story.

6.  Paris from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins - Isn't the setting one of the best things about this book?  I felt like I was exploring with Anna.

7.  Cousins Beach from The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han - Not only is the beach a major part of this series, but so is the house; I bet I can draw a map of the house by now!

8.  The Underworld from Abandon by Meg Cabot - Cabot's underworld is not such a scary place; just lonely and barren.

9.  Godspead from Across the Universe by Beth Revis - For a spaceship, we probably know by now every nook and cranny, right?

10. Seven Kingdoms from Graceling by Kristin Cashore - Cashore's world is incredible, it you haven't read this series, get on it!

That's it for me, I'm curious about your Top Ten, so leave a comment please :)

Review: Underworld by Meg Cabot (Abandon #2)

Title: Underworld by Meg Cabot
Published: May 8th, 2012 by Point
Source: Won from
Format: Paperback ARC
Challenge(s): ABC Challenge
Grade rate: A-

Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back. Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn’t dead. Not this time. But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey. Her captor, John Hayden, claims it’s for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they’ve come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves. But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies. And unless Pierce is careful, this time there’ll be no escape.

My Review

I liked Underworld much better than Abandon!  The main reason is that Pierce doesn’t come across as a whiny brat with very poor decision making, as she did in the first book.

In Underworld, Pierce is much more mature and (unlike the misleading synopsis) she does want to be with John regardless of where they happen to be.   She is more outspoken, and not afraid of John or her feelings for him.  Pierce is loyal, beautiful, sensitive and caring.  One of the best things I liked about this book is that John is in it much more than in the first.  We finally get to really know him, his story, why he acts the way he does and to what extent he will go to protect Pierce.  *Love you John!*

We get to visit with some of the characters from Abandon, Pierce’s mom, uncle Chris, Alex and Kayla; but we also get to know some characters from the underworld that are John’s ‘crew’.  I particularly liked Frank and little Henry.

The story picks up right after the events of Abandon and we follow how John and Pierce deal with each other and their new found relationship.  I’ve always loved Greek mythology and I love this take on the myth of Hades and Persephone, even if it is much less literal.  The plot is much better and action packed. Meg’s writing is flawless, easy to read, interesting, and lyrical and her character building is impeccable.

The ending was good, but a bit ambiguous; still I can’t wait for Awaken, the last part of the trilogy, due out sometime next year.

About the cover:  The cover is amazingly beautiful, with deep purple color and with whimsical swirls and font.  In it we see Pierce with her long dark hair and flowing white dress being pulled ‘under’ by John’s hand.  As I said, beautiful.
