Top Ten Character Names I Love or Top Ten Unusual Character Names

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish
Hi there gorgeous people!  This Top Ten wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be when I first started; I guess there are a lot of unusual names in books ;)

1.  Akiva and Karou from the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series by Laini Taylor - These name are very pretty.  Karou means 'hope' in the chimera language.  This series is nothing short of amazing.

2.  Peregrine and Aria from the Under the Never Sky series by Veronica Rossi - Perry is named after a bird and Aria due to her musical nature, unusual and beautiful names.

3.  Gansey from The Raven Boys series by Maggie Stiefvater - This isn't his true name, but I can't think of Gansey on any other way now.  Love him!

4.  Tana from The Coldest Girl in Goldtown by Holly Black - This is a really cool character from a pretty awesome book.

5.  Amaryllis and Phin from Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore - Phin is short for something, but I can't remember the whole name now. I think these sisters are both named after flowers.  The family is very unusual and unique to say the least, so the names have to be the same way :)

6.  Caymen and Xander from The Distance Between Us by Kasie West - Caymen is a strange name for sure; Xander is short for Alexander.

7.  Celeana and Chaol from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas - Another beautiful series for sure!  It's full of unusual names, although I imagine Celeana sounds like Selena. What do you think?

8.  Sybella from Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers - Pretty name for an assassin, right?

9.  Saba, DeMalo, and Lugh from the Dust Lands series by Moira Young - Another dystopian full of strange names (not necessarily pretty either)

10. Pellinore Warthorpe from the Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey - Pellinore is very weird (just like the man!)

Technically, there are more than ten here, but most of these turned out to be characters from the same book, so it's the same difference, right?

What's in your Top Ten this week?  Have you read any of these?

Review: Rebel Heart by Moira Young (Dust Lands #2)

Title: Rebel Heart by Moira Young
Published: October 30th, 2012 by Margaret K. McElderry
Source: Library
Format: Audio book, narrated by Heather Lind
Group age: Young adult
Genre: Dystopian
Challenge(s): 2013 Dystopian, 2013 Books in a Series
Grade rate: B+

It seemed so simple: Defeat the Tonton, rescue her kidnapped brother, Lugh, and then order would be restored to Saba’s world. Simplicity, however, has proved to be elusive. Now, Saba and her family travel west, headed for a better life and a longed-for reunion with Jack. But the fight for Lugh’s freedom has unleashed a new power in the dust lands, and a formidable new enemy is on the rise. What is the truth about Jack? And how far will Saba go to get what she wants? In this much-anticipated follow-up to the riveting Blood Red Road, a fierce heroine finds herself at the crossroads of danger and destiny, betrayal and passion.

My Review

I enjoyed Blood Red Road (see my review here) and I was eager to know what happened after Saba finds Lugh and here we have our answers.

Let me start by saying that I liked Rebel Heart better than its predecessor.  Overall, I liked the story and the world building.  The story starts where BRR ended.  Okay, here we go…

Saba is a puzzle to me.  On the one had side she is ferocious, like and warrior; on the other hand, she is a big mess of impulsiveness, whining, superstition and lack of common sense.  What on earth happened to her in the beginning?  It reminds me of Katniss at the end of Mockingjay, she kind of lost it!  Luckily it only took a session with a ‘seer’, Auriel, to get magically cured (*sarcasm indented*).   She has a blind faith in Jack, but then something happens (see spoiler below if you want to) that sucks out all common sense and she turns into a B*%#!  Sorry Saba, but I just don’t understand what happened to you.

One of the things that I loved the most from BRR was Saba and Jack’s relationship, and that is missing for almost the entire book :( However, Jack is as infuriating as always with his own brand of layback mocking intensity.  I love the first part of the book from his POV.  There must be a shortage of woman, because not only is there a love triangle, but a square, and let me tell you that Saba IS NOT a lovable person, like AT ALL!

DeMalo, is the bad guy and leader of the Tonton, BUT he is a very different type of ‘bad guy’.  He is so kind and sweet to Saba, even if he is a bit condescending and presumptuous.  Of course, like many antagonists, he deeply believes that he is doing the right thing (and in part he is), but going about it in the most appalling way possible.

I know that Saba went through a lot of trouble to save her twin, Lugh, but honestly, I can’t stand him! He is critical, annoying, an impossible know-it-all an unreasonable need to hurt others.  We don’t know yet what happened to Lugh while he was in captivity, but it seems like it affected him deeply.  In spite of that, instead of being grateful to Saba for saving him, he didn’t care that she had to kill for him and treated her very badly.  Emmi is as sweet as ever, she is gentle and good natured and tries to balance the darkness of Saba and now Lugh.  We see a host of characters, new and old.  My favorites of the new are Molly and Slim and the old are Mauve, Creed and Ash.  I did enjoy the big part that all the animals play in the story as well.

The writing, in the dialect of the time, didn’t bother me as I was listening to the book and by now I’m familiar with it.  The plot was slow at the beginning, but picked up quickly, even if it was all over the place!

Spoiler (highlight to see it): I typically don't do this, but I can't help it!
What the heck happened to Saba?  Emmi is kidnapped so she decides to act like a toddler with a tantrum, take her life, and ends in bed with DeMalo willingly!  The only think I can think of is that she was still ‘too open’ like the Auriel kept saying over and over and couldn’t resist DeMalo’s power of suggestion and charisma.  And then the very next day she does the same with Jack.  She has lied to EVERYONE!  Poor Tommo! This cannot end well!
End spoiler. (and end of venting!)

Overall, Rebel Heart is a good addition to the series, and I will definitely read Raging Star, the last book of the series, due to be published in April of next year.

Some quotes for you:

“What happens to you changes you. Fer good or ill, yer changed ferever. There ain't no goin back. No matter how many tears you cry.” – Saba

“He’ll banish the shadows. He’ll silence the whispers. An the wounds of my soul will heal.” - Saba

“All the time I’ve knowed you, Jack, you kept the door to that heart of yers locked up tight an the key hid away. Looks like she found it.
He says nothing. Molly waits. Then:
Keys ain’t her style, he says. She kicked the door down.” – Jack and Molly

About the cover – I liked original cover for BRB better, but this one is nice too.  I guess this is Lugh, surrounded by light, just as Saba sees him.

The Stranger She Married by Donna Hatch - I'm reading this one now, a regency romance (which I love), so far, so good.

Constant Hearts by Donna Hatch - Since the book above was going well, I got this novella by the same author.

Crushed by Dawn Rae Miller - It just sounded good, right?

Library

Breaking Point by Kristen Simmons - I enjoyed Article 5 and can't wait to read the sequel.

Rebel Heart by Moira Young - I started this audio book already and I'm loving it!  This is the sequel to Blood Red Road.

For Review

Grasping at Eternity by Karen Amanda Hooper - This book sounded like a blend of the paranormal  reincarnation and lost love, I couldn't help myself!  Thanks to Starry Sky and Netgalley.

PODs by Michelle K. Prickett - I love dystopians, and this one sounds awesome.  Thanks to Spencer Hill for the opportunity!

Top Ten YA Dystopian Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

Hi gorgeous people!  Sorry that I've been missing in action for the past few days, but I had company and was busy with all the cleaning, cooking and entertaining.

Here are my Top Ten for this week:

1 & 2.  Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of best series I've ever had the pleasure of reading.  I love everything about it, and Katniss and Peeta are my favorite characters in it.  I admire their strength and the endurance of their love.

3. Linden Ashby from the Chemical Garden series by Lauren DeStefano - DeStafano is a very talented writer because the character that I like most from this series is not the protagonist or her so-called love interest, but the alleged bad guy.  That's right, I really like Linden, even if he's spineless and  blissfully ignorant.

4 & 5.  Penryn and Raffe from Angelfall by Susan Ee - I absolutely love this one!  Such an amazing story (see my review here), so unique and raw.  Penryn is an incredible heroine, brave, loyal, smart, and all around awesome.  Raffe is just Raffe *sigh*

6. Chase Jennings from Article 5 by Kristen Simmons - You have to admire a man that would do anything for love (I sure do).  That's what Chase is all about.  I reserve my judgement of Ember until I read the next book, I really didn't like her until the very end of this book.

7 & 8.  Four and Tris from Divergent by Veronica Roth - Do I really need to explain this couple's awesomeness? Thought not...

9.  Saba from Blood Red Road by Moira Young - It is truly amazing what a person can do and become in order to survive and to defend their loved ones. Saba grew as a fighter and as a human being to defend her family.

10. Trella from Inside Out Maria Snyder - Trella is another fighter, against ignorance and against conformity and became the face of change in a very confined space.

Another busy and difficult week. Besides work and the kids school, my dear hubby had two deaths in his family within the same week, needless to say it has been really hard.  On a happier note, report cards came home on Friday and the boys did well (*deep sigh*).  This is what I got this week:

Purchased (Physical books)

Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger - I had pre-ordered this one and it finally came!  Can't wait to start you guys :)

Purchased (or Free) for Kindle

Tight Knit by Allie Brennan - I saw a few good reviews in Goodreads and decided to check this one out.  The cover is so cute.

Entangled by Nikki Jetford - What can I say?  I love this cover and it's about witches, what's not to like?

When in Paris by BeverleyKendall - I'm in love with the new adult books floating about and this one sounds awesome.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton - I've seen mixed reviews about this book, but I just can't help wanting it (I'm a sucker for pretty covers!)

Library

Victoria Rebels by Carolyn Meyer - I'm fascinated by Queen Victoria's life (and the movies made about it :) I read this one already and really enjoyed it (see my review here)

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson - I loved Amy & Roger and this books has to be just as good, right?

Angefall by Susan Ee - I saw a review of this one recently and now I'm curious about it.  Have you read it?

My Ex From Hell by Tellulah Darling - This book looks like so much fun!  Thanks to NetGalley and Te Da Media.

Top Ten Kick-Ass Heroines in YA

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

1.  Katniss from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – I don’t need to explain this one, do I?

2.  Meghan from The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa  - You know this is one of my favorite series ever!  Both Ash and Meghan are amazing.  Let me just say that I probably would have died in the Nevernever on day one.

3.  Hermione from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – I love both Harry and Ron, but the truth is that they would have never survived without Hermione.  She is the brains of the trio.

4.  Ellie from Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton – Fighting demons and her attraction to Will can’t be easy!

5.  Kaylee from the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent – This girl has spunk!  She has seen and fight a lot of weird stuff and she keeps going strong!

6.  Celaena from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – This is one of my favorite characters ever.  If you haven’t read this book, please give a try.

7.  Ismae from Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers – A girl that was sired by death itself and trained to be an assassin, I hope that you don’t need a further explanation.

8.  Riley from The Demon Trapper’s series by Jana Oliver – She’s a demon trapper. Really.

9.  Saba from Blood Red Road by Moira Young  - Saba turned out to be one of the most violent female characters that I’ve read (in YA) for a while.  She kicks everyone’s ass!

10. Finley from The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross - She is fearless, super strong and loyal; a great combination is you ask me :)

Review: Blood Red Road by Moira Young (Dust Lands #1)

Title: Blood Red Road by Moira Young
Published: June 7th, 2011 by Margaret K. McElderry
Source: Library
Format: Audiobook
Challenge(s): Support Local Library, 2012 ABC Challenge
Grade Rate: B-

Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That's fine by her, as long as her beloved twin brother Lugh is around. But when a monster sandstorm arrives, along with four cloaked horsemen, Saba's world is shattered. Lugh is captured, and Saba embarks on an epic quest to get him back.
Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the world outside of desolate Silverlake, Saba is lost without Lugh to guide her. So perhaps the most surprising thing of all is what Saba learns about herself: she's a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. And she has the power to take down a corrupt society from the inside. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization.

My Review

First, let me start by saying that I listened to Blood Red Road.  I clarify that because I have seen some comments about the dialect used in the book, but since I listed,  not read the book and from my point of view it was perfect.  Although there are some parts of this book that I didn’t like, I really enjoyed Blood Red Road.

Saba is our protagonist and she is not very likeable.  She is rude, has no manners, is stubborn, opinionated, violent, ungrateful and more.  Saba’s fixation with Lugh was a little hard for me to identify with.  I have siblings and I love them dearly, but Saba’s feelings for Lugh seem extreme (then again I don’t have a twin.)  It seems to me that Saba was a mix of Katniss from The Hunger Games and Katsa from Graceling, but not getting quite there yet.  I found hard to believe that a girl that was so sheltered and isolated could be this violent and resilient.  Some of her faults can be attributed to said isolation, I mean when you live with only three other people as companions, I guess manners are not necessary.  On the other hand Saba is strong and inspiring to others, and she did changed and grew up a little.

Emmi is Saba’s little sister and she is very sweet and a saint to put up with Saba!  Lugh doesn’t take a big part of the book, so I’ll reserve my judgment for the sequel.  Other characters were very well developed and are abundant.  Now it’s Jack’s turn.  Jack is kind of hard to figure out.  He is a handsome dare-devil and knows a lot about everything (I think he thinks he knows it all).  He is very easy going and doesn’t know what to do with Saba, but he is very good with people and especially with Emmi.  I really liked Jack and I hope we can see more of him in the series.

Other than my few issues with Saba’s character the story is fantastic.  It takes place somewhere in a distant future, where people don’t read (can you imagine?) and where people are very violent and life is hard and short (sort of like living in the wild west).  The writing is beautiful, well paced, with enough for us to know the setting and background information, but keeping an air of mystery at the same time.  I really enjoyed Blood Red Road and I am looking forward to book two, Rebel Heart, to be published in October of this year.

Have you read Blood Red Road?  Did the dialect bother you?

About the Cover:  The cover is okay for me, nothing exceptional about it. What do you think?
