Review: Winterveil by Jenna Burtneshaw (Wintercraft #3)

Title: Winterveil by Jenna Burtneshaw
Published: June 25th, 2013 by Greenwillow Books
Source: Library
Format: Hard cover
Genre: Fantasy | Paranormal
Age group: Young adult
Grade rate: A-

Teen Kate Winters and her powers are unique. She alone can understand Wintercraft, a book of ancient secrets. In Winterveil, the veil between the living and the dead is crumbling, and only Kate can stop it. The pull of the veil is powerful, and part of Kate wants to let it fall, allowing the dead overrun the living. Her best friend Edgar Rill urges Kate to save the world of the living. But Silas Dane can influence Kate too. Silas, a merciless villain, has the potential to behave honorably—if he chooses.

My Review
I was dying to read the conclusion of the Wintercraft series, sadly, my local library took forever to bring the book.  If you recall, the ending of Blackwatch was quite dire and all seemed hopeless (like the drama?).  I should have trusted Burtenshaw to be able to get Kate, Silas and Edgar out of that bind.

The story of Wintercraft is so unique.  The idea of a city where the dead was buried and was tended by a specially trained group of people and then abandoned it’s hard to imagine.  Even harder is that the dead couldn’t find peace when they built the new capital city on top of it.  The world building is impeccable, as it’s strange.

The story is told in the third person, which is very appropriate for this complicated story as it allowed the reader to be everywhere and know everything that was going one.  Even then, the plot is unexpected, complex and full of surprises.  The writing is straightforward and easy to read and understand and that is always a bonus when reading fantasy.

What to say about Kate?  She is somewhat different in Winterveil.  She’s more powerful, braver, more mature, and accepting.  It must be incredible scary and empowering at the same time to have a deeper understanding of things that most of the people cannot see.  To see and hear ghosts and a different world that is beyond most people’s comprehension.

Silas – would you get offended if I were to say that I fell in love with you as a character - *I’m sure he’s probably just shuddered*.  Silas is so, so, so …(hold on, I’m thinking of the right words) exceptionally difficult and loyal.  He has suffered so much, and keeps enduring everything the world throws at him, just to save Albion, the city he feels honor bound to protect.  Silas, I understand your sacrifice and I hope you find peace.  The relationship between Silas and Kate is also unique.  Even though there is a vast different in their age and experience, I kept hoping that the bond they shared would develop into something deeper.  One can only hope, right?

Edgar is sweet, protective, resourceful, but always timid and fearful.  In this installment we see the reasons why and I think he developed a bit of a backbone, for which I’m glad.  Even then, I just don’t see anything romantic developing between him and Kate.  –Just saying.

Dalliah is our evil character here, and evil she is indeed!  She has the same problem as Silas, leaving without a soul in a torturous state, and she has been like that for years.  She has done so many atrocities to bring down the veil and she sees a golden opportunity in Kate, which is a true Winter and much more powerful than she could ever be.

What a wonderful ending to the series, although it was very open.  I still hope for a ‘cure’ for poor Silas and some sort of reconciliation for Kate and the rest of the skilled. I think there is so much more of the story to tell *hint, hint, cough, cough*

About the cover: I always like the covers for these books.  This one is mysterious, I imagine it’s Silas running up the castle’s stairs in Albion about to confront the council.  I like the contrast of dark and light and the birds in the background.

Hello gorgeous people!  2013 promises to be an incredible year for YA.  My TBR list in Goodreads is overwhelming by now and I will probably never read that many books anyway, but a girl can only hope, right?

Here are some of the lovelies that I’m waiting for next year:

The Sequels:

1.  Shades of Earth (Across the Universe #3) by Beth Revis – Finally!  The conclusion to the series, I can’t wait to see if they revive everyone from Earth, what the new planet looks like and if Amy and Elder end up happy and together :)

The names change between the UK and US editions

2.  Legacy (Wintercraft #3) by Jenna Burtenshaw – The fantasy series is a jewel to me, full of magic, traitors, fear and courage.  It has already been published in the UK, but sadly, not on the States, yet.

3.  Throne of Glass #2 (untitled) by Sara J. Maas – I’m dying to see what happens next with our heroine and her suitors and I can’t wait to see the king defeated. (No book cover yet)

4.  If I Should Die (Revenants #3) by Amy Plum – After that mean cliffhanger, it’s no wonder I cannot wait for the third book.  I routing for you Vincent!

5.  Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins – Book one was pure awesome!  I needed this one, like, yesterday.

The Stand Alone:

6. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins – By the author of Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy next door, this promises to be as good. (No book cover yet)

7.  The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen – I will read anything she writes. Anything.

8.  This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith – The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, was really good, I can’t wait to see what this Smith comes up with next.

New Series:

9.  Just One Day by Gayle Forman – I’ve already heard wonderful things about the lucky souls that received an ARC of this one.  Did you read If I Stay?  Did you love it?  Thought so.

10. Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School #1) by Gail Carriger – If you’ve read Soulless (although I haven’t keept up with this adult series, it’s still amazing!), you know why I’m eagerly waiting for this one.  It should be epic!

And Because I Couldn’t Stop at Ten…

Beautiful cover, right?

Awaken (Abandon Trilogy #3) by Meg Cabot  - Underworld also ended in kind of a cliffhanger… finally we get to see John and Pierce happy (*crossing fingers*)

Divergent #3 (Untitled) by Veronica Roth – Although I haven’t read Insurgent yet, Divergent was outstanding, maybe I get to read both together next year :) (No book cover yet)

The Bitter Kingdom (Fire and Thorns #3) by Rae Carson -  I finished book two last night and Oh, my!  Just, wow! (No book cover yet)

Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin #2) by R.L. LaFavers  - I loved Grave Mercy, and these kick-ass heroines are amazing, plus, I hope that we get to see a bit of Ismae and Gavriel.

Review: Blackwatch by Jenna Burtenshaw (Wintercraft #2)

Title: Blackwatch by Jenna Burtenshaw
Published: June 26th, 2012 by Greenwillow Books
Source: Library
Format: Hardcover
Challenge(s): Support Local Library
Grade rate: A

“Deliver Kate Winters and be spared."

Kate is the one person gifted enough to work the magic held in the ancient book of "Wintercraft." And everyone wants her, either to lock her up or to use her as the ultimate weapon. Her rare power is being able to walk freely through the veil between life and death, and she cannot control it.

Hunted by the Blackwatch--the elite assassins of the enemy--and by her own people, Kate flees deep into tunnels beneath the graveyard city. And she is still inextricably linked to the murderer and traitor Silas Dane, who has crossed the ocean and walked straight into the enemy's hands.

As the Blackwatch closes in, Kate and Silas will face terrors that only they can keep from destroying Albion. And time is running out.

"Those who wish to see the dark, be ready to pay your price.

My Review

This was awesome!  Can you see me jumping up and down? The Wintercraft series is a fantasy extravaganza of amazing characters that find your way to the heart.

My review of Shadowcraft, first book in the series, can be found here.  Blackwatch keeps the same title as its UK counterpart and I’m glad for that.  This book picks up where Shadowcraft left off.  Silas is on the run from the High Council and Kate and her faithful friend Edgar are hiding in the underground city under Albion.  Silas thinks that by leaving Kate behind, she will be safer, the opposite is true and now she is an easy prey to all sort of bad things and people.  Kate has very strong powers, but she is not trained and is, in essence, a danger to others.

I love to visit again with these characters.  I can’t help but be sorry for Kate, her lack of knowledge and resources puts her in constant danger.  Edgar continuous to be a rock for Kate, and I like that he is so down to earth and has a great sense of humor.  Silas is not, by any means, a likeable character, but I can’t help but like him nonetheless.  In Blacwatch Silas falls unwillingly into Dalliah Grey’s hands and this has terrible consequences.  Dalliah is a truly awful villain and she is very strong with the veil, but not as strong as Kate is.

The plot of Blackwatch is really good.  I never saw any of the twists and turns coming.  The imagination of this world and the complexity of the underground city, of the past visions Kate keeps having, of the machinations of the veil are all remarkable.  The ending was a true cliffhanger.  I emailed Ms. Burtenshaw to ask when the Legacy (book #3) will be published in the US and she gracefully wrote back to say that it won’t be until next year.  I don’t think that can wait that long, I’ll probably get the UK version that just came out.

About the cover: I really like this cover. The play of dark colors and the light beyond the horizon. A city far away and a man (Silas?) walking toward it.

Have you read this series?  Do you like fantasy?

Bookmark This Week #14

I don't know about you but I probably own a good number of bookmarks.  I think this might be the case of all bookish people, but the problem is that I can never find one when I need it.  I end up using whatever I can find - receipts, post-in notes, ribbon, take out menus - because I really don't like to bend the pages of my books (and I often borrow them from the library.)
I thought it would be fun to share with you what exactly I am using as a bookmark every Monday.  Today I'm reading Blackwatch by Jenna Burtenshaw. I'm using a hot pink sticky note as a bookmark.

Please leave a comment to share your bookmark with me! Oh, and let me know if you like to see this feature every week or even see it as a meme /hop. If you are reading an eBook, please comment about your eReader's cover or on what interesting things are in your cover or case (I keep all sort of stuff inside my kindle's cover too!)

What are you using as a bookmark today?

Feature and Follow Friday (#10)

Feature and Follow Friday is an awesome blog-hop hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

This week's features are Holjo @ Pedantic Pooka and  Drying Ink and the questions is:

Have you ever wanted a villain to win at the end of a story?  If so, which one?

Yes.  I had to think hard about this one, but I came up with two villains.  The first is Silas Dane from Shadowcry (Wintercraft #1) by Jenna Burtenshaw.  He is supposed to be one of the villains, but I think he is just the misunderstood product of a mad woman’s desire for power.  Silas is such a strong character, straightforward and loyal to the end.
The second villain I thought about is Myrnin from the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine.  Myrnin is a vampire, and he is also both a genius and crazy to boot, but it still one of my favorite characters in the series.

How about you, who is your villain?

Review: Shadowcry by Jenna Burtenshaw (Wintercraft #1)

Title: Shadowcry by Jenna Burtenshaw
Published: June 21st, 2001 by Greenwillow
Source: Library
Grade rate: B

Kate Winters isn’t who she thinks she is. Burned out of her family bookstore by a suspicious fire, she will be pursued across a country riddled by fear and war before she discovers the extent of her skill and her destiny. Her pursuers include Silas Dane—one of the most compelling villains since Rowling’s Professor Snape and Pullman’s Mrs. Coulter—and Edgar, a young man who worked at the bookshop and who seems to know much more about the secrets of Wintercraft (a mysterious book that has been in Kate’s family for generations; a book responsible for the disappearance of her parents years ago) than he lets on.

My Review

This novel was published in the UK last year under the name ‘Wintercraft’, which makes a lot more sense that ‘Shadowcry’.  This is a fantasy book with some mystery thrown in the mix for good measure.   I felt the story was original, even if the concepts were a little hard to grasp.
The characters are very complex, each with their own agenda and strong personalities.  Kate comes across as an open-minded, practical young woman with a power that she neither understands nor wants.  Despite his cruelty and lack of remorse and empathy, Silas Dane was my favorite character.  He was product of an experiment gone badly and even if I didn’t like his methods, he had his own brand of honor.  Edgar was elusive and I hope we get to know him, and well as Artemis and Tom, better on the next installment.
‘Shadowcry’ is told from a third person point of view that is refreshing to see in YA.  The writing was a little slow at the beginning but it picked up at the end, and easy to read, and the plot was, as I said before, very original.  Ms. Burtenshaw is a brilliant writer and I am looking forward to more of her books.  One thing I didn’t like was the multiple attempts at escaping and the multiple times they got caught and / or separated.  It was a little irritating, but on the other hand, if someone was holding me against my will I know for sure I will do whatever it takes to gain my freedom and the freedom of my loved ones.
Overall, an interesting read with an original story line.  I am looking forward to the sequel (‘Blackwatch’ in the UK.)
About the cover:  The cover was pretty, but other than the arcs, the architectural detail, and the air of mystery, I feel that the UK cover was probably a better fit for the story.
