Discussion: Do You Read One Book at a Time

Once upon a time I would select a one book and stick to it until it was finished, even if I didn't like it.  After I started my blog my reading habits have changed.  If I start reading a book and I no longer like something (it can be the writing, the plot, the characters and the like) I stop reading.  In some cases I might go back and finish, just because I still feel the story was good enough and I want to know the ending.  Other times I just go to Goodreads and read a few five starts and a few 1-2 stars reviews to figure out if it's worth my time to continue.  Sadly, there are some books that I never finish.

I don't know if this happens to you, but there are instances in which I'm reading a book and I get another book that, in my eyes, must be read NOW!  So, I drop book one like a hot potato and promptly start reading the new shiny book :)

For the reasons above I might be in the middle of a couple of books at any given time, plus I'm always listening to an audio book in the car.

How about you?  Do you read one book at a time or many?  Are you a moody reader?

  1. I'm like you, I usually have a few books on the go at once. It always depends what mood I'm in but I find I can take my time more this way, especially if I want to make a book I'm enjoying last longer.

  2. Sometimes I am able to read more than one book at a time, but for the majority of the time...I like to give one book my full attention. I read a lot of the same type of book so I can get the storylines confused sometimes. I am usually great at multitasking, but not so much with books :)

  3. I'm a mood reader, so sometimes I'll abandon a book for something else and then come back to it once I feel ready, but I really can't read more than one or two books at a time or my mind gets jumbled! I do have to give audiobooks another chance ... I'm sure they'll come in handy in the summer when I'm doing yardwork and can't hold a book!

  4. I'm a mood reader as well.
Most times I'll pick up a book and try to get a few chapters into, if I'm still struggling to continue I'll take a break, pick something else up and come back to it. Sometimes giving a book a break helps me come back with a clear head, although sometimes it doesn't!

I have been trying to get into the habit of 'one book at a time'.

  5. I tend to be a one book at a time person. Whenever I start a new book whilst already part way through another one, the first inevitably ends up getting dropped completely! (usually because I wasn't that into it in the first place) Sometimes I'll go back to the original book eventually, but most of the time they end up languishing unfinished.

  6. I used to read one at a time, but as my TBR list grew, so did my attention span. Audiobooks sound useful, though. I'll be sure to give those a try.

  7. I'm definitely a one-book-at-a-time girl. I used to read multiple books at once, but funnily enough, once I started blogging, that changed. Now I read one book at a time, but it usually only takes me a day to get through them. Sometimes two.

  8. I usually read one book at a time, an exception being that I can switch back and forth between a fiction and a non-fiction. I've recently started to listen to audiobooks, as well, though, so I've become a 'one book and one audiobook' type of reader.

  9. You pretty much described how I am. This week I started two Netgalleys I had and neither one was keeping my interest. I figured to be fair to the book/author, I would find another book fitting my mood at the time and then come back to those two. I definitely found one that is keeping my interest! If I don't do this, then I take a really long time reading. I have to read my mood.

  10. I'm a one book at a time kind of reader, and it depends on what type of a mood I'm in. I always finish a book even if I don't like it because I'm hoping for it to get better.

  12. I always read 2 at the same time. One paperback in the bath and one e-book on my e-reader the rest of the time :)

    1. I sometimes keep a book on my bed side table, just to read before going to bed.

  13. I'm usually pretty good about sticking to one at a time, but the second one I've been dying for is released, whatever I'm in the middle of is dropped until I'm done the new shiny one lol

  14. I'm always reading a book + listening to an audiobook. I've been trying to read the Harry Potter series (for the first time), and I'm reading one chapter of that per day. So now I'm always reading multiple books at a time.

  15. I seem to always read a few books at once these days. Or sort of ... the past few months I've always had an audiobook going on in the background while doing house-tasks. I have a whole backlog of purchased kindle books that are un-read or partially read because when a new ebook comes in at the library I feel like I have to sideline the purchased books for the loaned ones!

  16. I'm definitely a moody reader, and I'm usually reading more than one book at a time. I was like you in the past, I would pick a book and force myself to finish it even if I really didn't like it, but eventually my TBR pile grew so much that I decided, too many books, not enough time, lol.
