Feature and Follow Friday

Feature and Follow Friday is an awesome blog-hop hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

This week's features are Cailtin @ The Y.A. Bookworm Blogger and Carmen @ Carmen Jenner this week's question is:

What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

Hmm, I can think of a few:

1. All over the place POV - If the book is from alternate POVs, I appreciate a heads up (namely the chapter 'title'. It's not hard to get me confused!).  Also I don't like when the story's been told from one character's POV and then all of the sudden we have new ones.

2.  Repeated words - What I mean by this is, for example, everyone using a certain word over and over.  I read a book recently (that shall remain unnamed) in which every called each other 'dude'.  Needless to say, this got on my nerves.

3.  Inaccurate facts - This is more bothersome when I'm reading historical fiction/romance.  If the author decides to write a historical book, I think he or she owes to the reader their best attempt at research.  Inconsistent facts or language that doesn't below to the period is just bad form.

4. Unbelievable instant love - I know this will be in many lists, but I don't mind insta-love if is well done.  Willing to die for someone you met two days ago, is just not realistic.

What trick gets you irritated?

  1. I can't believe I forgot repeated words when I wrote my FF!! That really does take me out of a story. Especially in an audiobook. It's really, really obvious in that format.

  2. I totally agree about having one point of view, and than all of a sudden a bunch! This exact thing ruined the Ashes trilogy for me.

  3. The inaccuracies in historicals is a major pet peeve of mine! I want my writers to do their research properly. I can usually overlook a few (if it doesn't ruin my enjoyment), but too many can make me give up. Old follower.

    Happy Friday!

  4. Insta-love is a definite dislike, but I didnt even think about repeated words! (phrases too!!) That does get annoying!! Can the character (or author) think of nothing else to say?

  5. For some reason the words baby or boo drive me completely nuts! I can't help rolling my eyes every time I read it.

  6. Oh, I agree with your points. I don't care for cliffhangers, but mostly I hate anything that happens due to coincidence. I like logical steps to a conclusion.
