Interview
1. What
inspired you to include the elements in Carrier of the Mark?
It rains in Ireland. It rains a
lot. I knew from the beginning that these books would be set in Ireland, and I
wanted to tie in the weather, the rich landscape, and the amazing lore of
Ireland in a fun and magical way. The elements were perfect for doing all of
this and allowed me to explore a little of Ireland’s pagan history, which is
utterly fascinating.
2. Which
of the two books was your favorite to write so far? Why?
That’s such a difficult question to
answer. I love them both for different reasons. Carrier of the Mark was my
first book, my first love. It was where I met my characters and fell in love
with them, villains and all. But in Shadow of the Mark I got to play with the
developing characters, torture them a bit, push their abilities to the next
level. I got to see some of the characters darker sides. There’s a lot more
action in Shadow of the Mark, and I loved that feeling of anxiety I felt as the
book came to it’s conclusion.
3. The
covers for your books are amazing. Is that what you envisioned?
Thank you! I’d always envisioned my
covers as light and simple with just a touch of color, so I was so excited when
I saw the cover of Carrier. It was just beautiful. The light cloud with the
splash of inky blue really worked for me. I loved that they carried the theme
for the second book making it instantly recognizable. The edition of the dark stormy
clouds reflects the darker more sinister undertones of Shadow of the Mark
4. Who
is your favorite character of the series and why?
I love all my characters dearly.
Adam and Megan are obvious picks. I adore them. I also quite fancy Rían, and
Caitlin is such a fun girl and such a good friend. There’s a couple of new
characters that I’m having fun with in this book too and they are growing on
me. I guess Áine is a firm favorite. I
do love her so. Her character is really developing in Shadow and she’s starting
to walk a fine line. I love that element of excitement and danger in her.
5. Are
there any books coming out this year that you can't wait to read?
Yes. My bookshelves are still
heaving under the weight of my TBRs from 2012 , but for the 2013 releases, I
can’t wait to read Siege & Storm by Leigh Bardugo, Goddess by Josephine
Angelini, Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike, and If I Should Die by Amy Plum.
About the Author
Leigh
Fallon was born in South Africa, raised in Dublin, Ireland and moved to Cork in
her 20's. While living in beautiful Kinsale, her novel, The Carrier of the Mark
was conceived. She promptly abandoned her 'riveting' career in corporate
treasury and discovered Inkpop, a website for budding writers of teen fiction.
Within weeks her manuscript hit the coveted top five spot and was reviewed by
an editor at HarperCollins. A few emails and some hysterical screaming later,
she signed her first deal. Leigh and her family now share their time between Ireland
and the US.
