An Expensive Addiction

I am an avid reader, and so are most of by readers and beloved followers.  It dawned on me as I was planning my budget for the next month that I set aside certain amount of money for books every month.  Is that crazy?  My budget looks like this: food $3, clothes $2, new printer $5, books  I feel like I spend a lot of money on books, both in print and in eBooks; and you know what?  I can’t help myself, I guess that is exactly what an addiction is, except that mine is not harmful to my heath (except when  I have too many books lying around the and my hubby gets mad at me).
I know you’re thinking that going to the library might solve all my problems. But here is the catch:  I don’t get to keep the library books (even when I love them) and I have to give them priority over all my other books.   My TBR pile is a mountain by now and I keep buying books faster that I can read them.  This is my third week in school and I haven’t been able to read much (for fun) and I feel like I’m going through withdrawal (plus I feel guilty every day I don’t post in the blog).  At this point I am quite desperate to read a good book.
How about you?  Do you spend a lot on books?  Do you have any advice or tips for me or I am alone in my addiction?

  1. I know what you mean. Here what my list looks like:
    - Bills: Obligation. HAVE to pay.
    - Clothes: Optional. NOT necessary.
    - Books: I HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK NOW! IT CAN'T WAIT!

We don't have libraries, so I'm kind of on the same boat as you. I have to buy them. What I do is that I buy a lot of used books. Most of the time they look brand new. So, I save money and I get my book(s).

I prioritize the books I want to get. Make a list of the books I'm dying to read and then go from there.

But then they sit on the shelve, waiting to be read.

    Oh, well... (laughs)

  2. Haha, I can definitely relate. I try to make a book budget for the month, and every time I come back from book shopping, I'm like "I'm not buying any more books this month!" And that lasts like a week, until I find more books I want. Then my friends will be like, "I thought you said you weren't going to buy any more books for a while?"

So you are for sure not the only one with a book-buying addiction. I try to use the library, but, like you mentioned, then I have to give them top priority and sometimes I feel like reading something else instead, and then I get frustrated.

So thank heavens for Amazon and Ebay, so I can get books for cheap!

  3. I am right there with you, my TBR pile is constantly growing. Even thought I spend a lot on books, I never really feel guilty about buying. I guess I figure they aren't a waste and are good for the mind! Since I started blogging the pile just seems to be getting bigger :0)

    You are not alone!

  4. I totally know where you're coming from. I give myself a monthly allowance for books so I almost exclusively buy used so I can get more. I just looked at my shelves today with over a hundred books that I haven't even read yet. My husband is also saying I need to stop. He says it like I'm addicted to something bad. I don't have any advice to help though, but maybe we should join a support group lol.
